Montmorency Unsweetened Dried Cherries, No Added Sugar, Just a Light Coating of Sunflower Oil to Prevent Sticking.
We’re often asked why the unsweetened dried cherries are more expensive than the sweetened dried cherries. It’s because there are almost twice as many cherries per pound in the unsweetened cherries. Sugar, which is a fairly inexpensive ingredient, acts as a preservative, and also adds weight and plumpness to the cherries. Without it, the cherries need to be dried to a greater extent in order to be shelf stable. This results in a smaller, lighter, and chewier dried cherry (still delicious, especially if you like ’em tart!), thus many more cherries per pound.
